Spiritual Direction
When someone encourages you, that person helps you over a threshold you might otherwise never have crossed on your own.
– John O’Donohue in Eternal Echoes
It is not possible to nurture and sustain a spiritual life alone; we need the company, support, and challenge of others.
Spiritual Direction is a particular kind of companionship. It is less about “directing” another person than it is about being fully present, and listening, together, for the movement of Spirit in our lives. It is a good thing to have support for the ongoing process of finding meaningful prayer and “listeningways.”
Having had a spiritual director myself for thirty years, our regular meetings keeps me mindful of whether I am keeping my regular appointment with mystery or not. I don’t know what I would have done, quite frankly, without the supportive presence of this wise companion through the ups and downs of my life.
