Spiritual Direction

When someone encourages you, that person helps you over a threshold you might otherwise never have crossed on your own.

– John O’Donohue in Eternal Echoes

It is not possible to nurture and sustain a spiritual life alone; we need the company, support, and challenge of others.

Spiritual Direction is a particular kind of companionship. It is less about “directing” another person than it is about being fully present, and listening, together, for the movement of Spirit in life. It is a good thing to have support for the ongoing process of finding meaningful prayer and “listeningways.”

Having had a spiritual director myself for thirty years, our regular meetings keeps me mindful of whether I am keeping my regular appointment with mystery or not. I don’t know what I would have done, quite frankly, without the supportive presence of this wise companion through the ups and downs of my life.
